Can anyone help me with the pronunciation of Fasnacloich?
Thanks.
I've never seen that before, but I assume it's a place name, something like "level place of the stones" (
fas nan cloiche).
As you've written it, the pronunciation would be more or less:
fass nuh kliçThe ç represents a sound not really used in English, which is a softened version of the usual hard "ch" sound found in Gaelic words like
loch.
If you have access to anyone who speaks German and can pronounce words for you, it's basically the same as the "ch"" sound in the German word
ich, as contrasted with the hard "ch" in
Bach or
Buch.
What might help is for you to say
loch, and notice how it is "voiced", with your vocal cords vibrating. The softened version is made without the vocal cords vibrating at all (it's "devoiced").
