I am curious about the Scottish Gaelic spoken in Canada. What dialect is it closest to? Is the grammar the same? I assume it is mutually intelligible with the Gaelic spoken in Scotland but how much so? Do people who speak and learn Gaelic in Canada especially in Cape Breton just use standard Scottish Gaelic these days? Any other info/links you can give me would be great. Thanks!
The Gaelic speakers in Nova Scotia came primarily form the Western Highlands and the Islands (the Hebrides), so the dialects spoken there would have predominated. Wikipedia has a very good article on Gaelic in Canada, including Cape Breton Gaelic, and compares a few features of it with their roots in Scotland:
